An early morning fire at a McDonald's restaurant on Route 1 in Elkridge Thursday sent one person to the hospital.
Battalion Chief for Howard County Fire and Rescue Eric Proctor said the blaze, which was reported about 5:40 a.m., took firefighters an hour to bring under control.
One person, identified as a civilian suffering from smoke inhalation, was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, he said. He did not know if the person was a McDonald's employee.
"They think it started somewhere in the grill," Proctor said of the fire. "That's right around the time they start getting in and start cooking stuff."
Proctor said the fire is not being investigated as arson and that he doesn't not know exactly how much damage was done.
"I don't know the extent of the damage at this point," Proctor said Thursday afternoon. "Obviously, it's not going to be open for awhile."
